Following two years of renovation work, the Théâtre du Chatelet, nestled in the 1st arrondissement, reopened on September 13th and now proudly presents its painstakingly restored facades, stage, auditorium and many other areas. The spirit of this monument dedicated to the musical arts has been carefully preserved throughout. Originally opened in 1862, this performance venue is an architectural gem that’s well worth a visit. The Théâtre du Chatelet has been faithfully restored
The Théâtre du Chatelet, a historical monument and a property of the City of Paris, is proud to present its newly restored face, the result of a fifth major renovation that began in early 2017. This project, involving technical improvements and a careful consideration of the building’s heritage, was undertaken in part to give the public improved access and the opportunity to enjoy more popular shows.
The theatre’s renovation took place over two and a half years and involved 300,000 hours of work. Some 20,000 m2 of walls were repainted, the paint and gold leaf of the Grand Salle balcony and cupola have been returned to their former glory, 100 km of cables were replaced, and the glass ceiling now has its original backlighting.
The foyer, the main halls and staircases are resplendent as a result of their restoration in a neo-Pompeian spirit.
Outside, on the perimeter of the Nijinski terrace, the allegorical statues symbolising dance, music, comedy and drama are back in place. These were removed at the end of the 19th century.
Prestigious programming
After this rejuvenation, the Théâtre du Chatelet is ready for a remarkable programme of performances. The Club Joséphine, a performance space that pays homage to Josephine Baker, recently welcomed jazz musician Gilles Peterson and is planning to present performers such as Kiddy Smile, Guts, Bonobo and Myth Syzer in the coming months.
