A five-minute walk from the Paris France Hotel is a fascinating place that appeals to all ages: the Musée des Arts et Métiers (Museum of Arts and Crafts). Located in the premises of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, it is an industrial design museum in which scientific instruments and inventions are preserved and displayed.
An extraordinary place
The Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers was founded in 1794 by the Catholic priest and revolutionary leader, Abbot Henri Grégoire, with the aim of training the future technicians and engineers of the fledgling Republic. For this purpose, a collection of scientific and technical artifacts was created with the intention of aiding the training and which, over the decades, has become a real treasure that you can discover. The CNAM was established in the buildings of the Priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, the history of which dates back to the 11th century. There, you can discover the old Priory Church, one of the last Romanesque style buildings in the capital.
Machines and wonders
The collections of the Musée des Arts et Métiers are incredibly rich and varied. Exhibited in spacious and bright buildings, they are remarkably well presented. Numerous workshops and thematic visits, some of which are aimed at young people, invite you to learn more about the exhibits. Early aircraft, astrolabe, telegraph, Foucault’s pendulum, the projection apparatus of the Lumière brothers, printing presses and machines from the beginnings of the industrial era sit alongside Pascal's calculating machine and models of the Machine de Marly, which pumped water from the Seine to the fountains of Versailles… A fascinating look into technical progress and its history!
Learn about the fascinating history of industrial design, technology and machines just a few steps from the Paris France Hotel. The beauty of the place alone makes it well worth a visit!
