The Enfants Rouges Market

When it was established in 1628, the Marché des Enfants Rouges was known as the Petit Marché du Marais, as well as the Marché de Beauce. The names derive from the market’s close proximity to the Hospice des Enfants-Rouges, and the Rue de Beauce. The Enfants Rouges was an orphanage in which the children were required to wear red clothing, hence the name. Founded by Marguerite de Navarre, a member of French royalty, the orphanage existed from 1524 to 1777. Today the covered market that occupies this location is the oldest still in use in Paris, and is even registered as an historical monument! Here in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, at 39 Rue de Bretagne, you’ll discover a vibrant and typically Parisian market offering clothing, crafts and, best of all, an impressive range of international cuisine.

The Square du Temple

The sun shines in Paris and summer is in full swing, so it’s great to find a picturesque green space in which to relax. Happily, the Rue de Bretagne has the Square du Temple. Built on the site where a Knights Templar fortress once stood, this botanic garden is 7700 m² of absolute delight, boasting many species of trees and other flora. Children can have fun on the playground or play on the vast lawn that opens to the public from April 15th to October 15th. Lovers appreciate the romantic ambience of the pond, with its water feature built of rocks from the forest of Fontainebleau. Enjoy the cool, dappled shade of this green lung in the heart of the city.
