Don’t miss Bacon: Books and Paintings at the Pompidou Centre
The Pompidou Centre has decided to put the great works of the 20th century in the spotlight. In keeping with this aim, Bacon: Books and Paintings is scheduled to run from September 19th, 2019 to January 20th, 2020. The exhibition focusses on the period from 1971 until Bacon’s death in 1992 and brings together some sixty works to investigate how literature influenced the Irish artist. Texts by Nietzsche, Conrad, Eliot and other authors who inspired Bacon will be read aloud. The words give meaning to paintings that reflect the world as Bacon saw it. His works are often grotesque. However, emancipating themselves from idealism they attain an intense splendour and truth. The triptychs that the figurative painter loved so much will be prominently featured.
Associated programmes to enrich your experience
Bacon: Books and Paintings can be seen from 11:00 to 21:00, with a late opening on Thursdays until 23:00. From September 28th to December 29th, children's workshops are also on the programme. The young audience enters the world of Bacon through an adventure off the beaten track. These games allow children to understand the deformations that the human body often undergoes at the artist’s hands, making it easier to appreciate the paintings and, especially, grasp their meaning.
From September 14th to December 29th, Bacon: Books and Paintings can be enjoyed via a guided tour. A guide will explain the historical backgrounds and artistic assets of the works exhibited at the Pompidou Centre.
